Fiber Laser Cutter Maintenance

Fiber Laser Cutter Routine Maintenance 101

Maintaining a fiber laser cutter is crucial for its efficiency, longevity, and precision cuts. The laser operator can perform simple maintenance tasks to ensure optimal performance. Boss FC Series fiber laser cutters are designed to simplify maintenance tasks even further.

Daily Maintenance

General Cleaning: Clean your machine daily. Ensure the laser area is free of clutter, flammables, and volatile solvents. Keep the working area, including the dust cover, control unit, work bed blades, collecting tray, and cutting drawer, free from dust and debris.

Optics Inspection: To ensure the laser’s focus and the quality of the cut, it is vital to keep the lens, collimator, and other optical components free of any dust or debris. Boss Laser’s FC Series optics are isolated and require only an inspection through a protective window. To avoid any scratches, it is recommended to use proper cleaning solutions and non-abrasive cloths.

Inspect and Clean the Nozzle: The cutting nozzle is a consumable part. The frequency of replacement depends on the processed material and proper maintenance. Inspect and clean the nozzle daily; replace it if damaged or worn out. Remove any metal residue with a wire brush and clear nozzle orifice to ensure the laser’s cutting precision.

Purge Air Compressor: If the machine uses an air compressor for lifting mechanisms or actuators, it is essential to purge the compressor daily. A high-quality air filter/dryer is recommended.

Weekly Maintenance

Check Fume Extraction System: Ensure the fume extractor works efficiently to maintain a safe working environment and prevent contaminants from building up on the machine’s internal components..

Inspect and Clean the Machine’s Exterior: Regular cleaning of the machine’s exterior and work area prevents the accumulation of debris that could interfere with the laser’s operation.

Monthly Maintenance

Inspect Hoses and Connections: Inspect coolant hoses, fittings, and all electrical and mechanical connections. Repair leaks and replace damaged or excessively worn components immediately.

Inspect and Clean Exhaust: Clean the exhaust blower and duct system and remove any built-up debris. Inspect the exhaust system for leaks and obstructions. Ensure all connections are properly secured. Also, check for loose or broken duct connections. Inspect and clean the exhaust ports in your machine to ensure there are no obstructions within the machine itself.

Inspect Air Filters: If your machine uses an air assist feature, check and replace the air filters as needed to ensure clean, uninterrupted airflow.

Every 3 to 6 Months

Inspect and Lubricate Drive System: Inspect the rail and bearing or ball-screw systems, clean if necessary, and lubricate as needed. High-quality systems in the Boss FC Series only require this maintenance every 60 miles of travel, up to 6 months.

Change Chiller Water: Drain and replace chiller water. If the machine will be exposed to freezing temperatures, make sure to “winterize” the chiller system to protect it from damage.

Annual Maintenance

Full Inspection: Have a technician perform a comprehensive check annually, including components and areas not inspected during routine maintenance.

Update Software: Ensure the machine’s software is updated with the latest versions and patches to maintain optimal operation and access new features.

Lubricate Moving Parts: Apply lubricant to moving parts to ensure smooth operation and prevent wear and tear.

General Tips

Keep a Maintenance Log: Document all maintenance activities to track the machine’s performance and identify potential issues before they become significant problems.

Train Staff: Ensure all operators are trained in proper maintenance procedures to help maintain the machine’s condition and operational efficiency. Larger FC Series fiber laser cutters include a two-day setup and on-site training.
